My Ride: BMW E-60 530I

Hi guys,
My car is reaching 50K miles and I wanted to do the required preventative service on the car.

So far its seems like I should replace the following

Transmission fluid - I have NEW OEM filter/panel with OEM Oil. Question is, BMW doesnt recommend doing the change and every "BMW specialist" I talk to recommends me not to do it. What are your thoughts? is it too late to change? Could it cause any further damage. Right now I have no issues with the transmission whatsoever. (knock on wood)

Spark Plugs - replace them with new OEM spark plugs

Differential Fluid - replace with either Redline or BMW oem fluid. Which one do you guys recommend?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Should I also consider replacing the Thermostat and flushing the cooling system?
Should I flush power steering fluid?

Thanks guys1!

Seems a bit early to do most of that stuff. Maybe the sparkplugs, yes, but the rest can probably wait a bit. I just changed my transmission oil this weekend at 79k miles, also just changed my diff oil (I used Royal Purple 75W-90). My spark plugs I changed around 65k miles. From waht I kept reading before doing any of this was that if you change your transmission fluid before 100k miles you're fine, after 100k it will probably do more harm than good so don't bother. Good luck

I'd question the logic behind not changing the transmission fluid after 100k miles - I'd agree that it needs to be changed out with new filters installed by ~80k miles, but if it wasn't changed on time, you would only make a bad situation worse by not changing the fluid & filters ASAP.

Also, I've read some posts on the various fora which indicate that ~140k miles is a critical life span for the automatic transmissions, and can be downright ugly if they haven't been serviced prior to reaching that service life...

I will be watching this thread with great interest. Mine has 49,000 miles. Is there a standard 50,000 mile service?

There is no standard 50k service. My SA told me that it used to exist before there was an idrive which could tell them what is due and what should be done. Now they just blindly follow error messages in the diagnostic and on the iDrive.

honestly when it comes to the e60 there isn't really a service list or services you must do it all depends on how you drive the car and the type of abuse u put it though other then that sometimes u need a tranny change at 30k and for others u need it at 110k

50k might be a bit early for a transmission flush. However, you really do need to do this around 75 to 100k!

And remember.. You need it flushed! not just changed.

To me at least, it's too early to do any of those items. I'd suggest spark plugs and diff fluid around 65-70k miles and tranny fluid change around 95-100k miles. Of course, this depends on how you drive the car but these E60's are, as you know, very well engineered using very high end fluids/parts. The only thing that would maybe need changing is your brake fluid (if over ~2 years old) and maybe power steering fluid depending on color/viscosity. Honestly though, I say don't worry about it and go enjoy putting some more miles on your E60!

I checked my engine oil monitor on iDrive...says it's good for another 11,000 miles! Is that normal?
