I went through the same process. I think the E class interior is cheap. Before driving the E class, I tried the Infiniti M35. The plastic in M35 is much better than the one in the E class. I was shocked. Also, the climate control dial is very loose. It feels cheap.

The BMW interior quality is much better. All control dials are tight. Both woods and the plastic are good.

Price wise, you cannot beat the BMW European Delivery deal.
Right now in US similarly equipped E 550 is about $10K less than BMW 550. If I were 10 years older I would probably pick the Benz. That 5.5 litre engine is very tempting.

I thought the E500 I was testing didn't handle any where near as well as the E350, which wasn't as good as the 545 I drove.

Deal breaker was the location of the indicator stalk (absolutley pointlessly low), and the bland exterior styling.

Comforts seats are a winner!

Cheers

My daughters decided that i was still too young for an E class. Image is (sadly) a key element here!

I've owned both and I have to say that even though I thought I could like the E500, it never grew on me. It was seriously lacking in handling compared to BMW and the thing that clinched it for me was the technology. Being somewhat of of a techno geek, it's my opinion that MB is at least a couple of years behind BMW in this area.

I drove all the 'comparable' vehicles brefore I decided on the E60. At the end of the day, it was just a better drive, and much cheaper than the E350 at the time. I recently attended a BMW X-Drive comparison drive, and drove the E350 again, head to head with the E60 528xi and 535xi. I will say that I was more impressed by the E350 this time - it was a very enjoyable and comfortable drive, and better driving feel than the last time I drove it. I still say the E60 is superior as a driving car. In Canada, at least, the E350 is more expensive too, which helps sway the decision.

Not to start an argument, but the e60 5 doesn't exactly have the greatest track record for reliability.
I dont know about US
BUT in HK BMW are very good compare to MB.
basicly all my frends that got MB say it is very $hit in reliability, mostly on the software ele.
I have a webpage of the Hong Kong Goverment Transport Department and if you can see there are loads of MB and not 1 BMW
this is from 2004 until now.
http://www.td.gov.hk/public_services/vehic...ecall/index.htm
So MB are 100000000 X worse than BMW, BMW done a good job in HK.

It dose not matter how old you are if you drive a BMW than you are young again.
But if you drive a MB then if you are young, you look very old.
Most MB e -class drivers I see are well in there late 30 and over, you will never see a 30 year old driving 1 in HK, well I never seen 1.

maybe that's why MB now have the 'sporty' bonnet badge down on the bonnet, whereas the 'more conservative' driver likes his badge sticking up

I found the MB interior too cheap feeling and the drive too plush. The MB is an older guys car with a very strong Chinese following . BMW offers a more definitive sports sedan feel with a generally better design and appeal IMO.

Cheers

Fine daughters you have!

Driving a M-B E under the age of 60 with nice wheels etc gives "getto image"
