From 5 to 3 - how I rationalize the move
What an excellent post!
It really captures the funfer's essence. This is the 2nd Ive owned (prior was a an E39) and my third BMW...I also owned an E36/8 M Coupe as my weekend "speed therapy" (talk about balls-out automotive anger management candidate!)
A few years ago, as a 40th b'day present, my wife sent me the M Driving school in Spartanburg. This was right at the E39/E60 model changeover. We had the chance to drive both E39 M5's and E46 M3's and REALLY wring them out over 2 1/2 days. When I got back, she asked me how I liked it...The best way I could describe the personalities of the cars was by comparing them to the difference between a scalpel and machete...the 3 was very much a precision instrument with finesse while the 5, with its power, was all about brute force...both were absolutely amazing vehicles, but for very different reasons.
Fast forward to today...Ive owned my E60 for about a month and a half now. Every day I find something else that makes me love the car even more. Alot of the finesse qualities I like in the prior generation M3 and M5s have been translated into this 5er. As an E39 owner, I was one of the early "Bangle Bashers" when the E60 came out (you know.."Dame Edna headlights, etc...) Man was I wrong. I still love the E39's but after owning an E60, even for such a short time, I can honestly say it makes the E39 feel "dated". So carrying on with the cutting instrument analogy...what would I call an E60 5er? A katana...clean, sophisticated, and VERY good at what it does.
