What about "e" like 325e and 528e?

These were the so-called "Eta" engines providing lower output as well as improved fuel consumption -- for those crazy days of oil embargoes of the late 70s and early 80s. These were probably the worst engines BMW has built in the past 50 years. But then also remember that in those days Mercedes did not even offer a gasoline engine in its lineup in the US. Even the S-class was a diesel and so were the coupes.

the 'i' originally stood for injection back in the late '70s, i had one of the first examples, a '77 630csi, but its meaning has often changed

in the mid '80s it stood for 'high revving engine' ... i had an '86 325es, and the difference between my car and the 325is was the engine red line..

now it only differentiates between petrols and diesels...AFAIK

A stands for auto tranny. But it's just an internal thing, used among BMW drivers, enthusiasts and BMW engineers. It's not an official model designation, that's why you never see it on the back of the car. Just like "E60"...

However, it is located on the Production Information Sticker located on the drivers door pilar adjacent to the tire pressure info on US spec cars. Mine for instance says 645iA.
