A stands for auto tranny. But it's just an internal thing, used among BMW drivers, enthusiasts and BMW engineers. It's not an official model designation, that's why you never see it on the back of the car. Just like "E60"...

The "i" harkens back to the days when BMW made both carbureted cars and fuel injected cars. For example, the 2002 could be had as a 2002ti or as a 2002tii- the later of those with the extra "i" was the fuel injected car. As all BMWs became fuel injected, the "i" at the end of the model designation continued- even though all BMW cars are now fuel injected.
