Hi Friends:

While it was colder than 37 degrees Fahrenheit this morning, and on recent mornings, I got my first snowflake warning triangle this morning. I know that I could probably find some of my answers in the manual, but one of you will know off the top of your head. First, I wonder why I have never received a snowflake warning before--even though it has been down 37 and below on prior days. Second, why does my car proudly announce 37, on my screen, when it detects 37 and not wait until it reads the lowest temp it sees shortly after getting on the road? I guess the reason is that at 37 there could be ice on bridges, etc., but I am not sure. TIA.

 

The warning goes off when the outside temp falss to approx. 37.5 degrees F (3 degrees C) - that is all the manual says - and then gives a warning about black ice

It has not been above 37 since I bought my car, and I do not recall the warning everytime I start the car, but for you VNOD, I will check and keep you updated.

Vnod, your guess is correct, at 37 there is a chance of ice on the road and that is why the warning. Had it on my 2001 e39 too.

Thanks much, you are right. I thought that he was saying that he had not seen the warning for a while since it had not been 37 or below. But, he's saying sort of the opposite. Maybe the warning only shows up if, for example, it is above 37 in your garage and is, or drops, below 37 when, or shortly after, you drive out. Would that make sense for the snowflake system? No!!! Wouldn't the purpose of the snowflake system be to let you know any time icing may be a problem?

OK, I am confused again--in addition to being confused about not being able to sense AS and not knowing whether my headlight switch is in or out. Oh well. I always say the forums are great for clarifying things. But, sometimes , and they make me .

 

you should see what happens here in AZ...we get the 115 degree cactus warning. go hold a hair dryer up to your sensor and check it out.

 

Yeah, soory I was unclear.

The highest temperature my car has seen is 28 degrees F since I got it. Still no space in the garage. But I can not remember seeing the snowflake every time I start, but since it always probably comes on I am just used to it.

My wife's truck has an ice warning and she gets to park in the garage. When she starts her car no warning, but when she drives out in the cold it comes on. I assume the BMW would work just the same.
