I would think 330 to 545 would be more logical. Unless you just need more room, you'll sacrifice some performance-wise, and progression shouldn't involve sacrifice unless it's absolutely necessary.
If you really need the room, and are on a strict budget, then I'd look at the 535 or 530. But if you don't really need the room and are on a budget I'd look at the E90 330. If you do need the room, and can spend the extra $'s, then definitely go for the 545.
I haven't heard too many 545 owners wishing they had bought a 530 or 535.

My Ride: Current - 330 Sport Topaz Blue, Grey Leather, HK HIFI...lost interest!!
Waiting for - 535d Sport, Silver Grey, Foldy Mirrors, 172 19",Logic7,Pro Radio,Through load,Heated Front Seats,High Gloss shadowline,Black Maple,Headlight wash,Sun Protection Glass.
I would go for a 545 if the price of juice in the UK was the same megga low price that you guys fill up for, thats why the 535 is the bus of choice for me, size also, and 6.5 secs same as my 330, and then theres torque...ah yes torque...torque like an M5
