You are too tall for 3 series. I am 6-foot tall, 3 is too small for me already.
Plus you are a family man with 2 kids, I will not consider getting a 3 series other than budget issue.

I have a 04 545 and my son has a 06 330. Both have the sport package. I agree completely with the prior comments. The 330 with SP is more agile than the 545 with SP in terms of handling. The cabin of the 5 er is clearly more spacious as is the trunk. I am 6" 2" I find the the e90 to be fine in that regard. However with a family I would opt for the 5 series because of the rear seat leg room factor and the larger trunk. Both are great cars.

I live in suburban Chicago and I find that rear wheel drive with winter tires works fine. However if you get winter tires this leads to another set of wheels so that the wheels don't get beat up with regular tire changes each winter. I question the need for all wheel drive in Indianapolis.

BMWs are absolutely wonderful cars. I am already planning to get another 5 er or possibly a 7 er in 07. After my son ordered his 330 my wife accused me of teaching my son my bad habits. Hey, he is an adult and makes his own decisions and he can afford the 330.

I'm 6'2" and 190 lb and I have fitted great into all my BMW's.

I'm seriously thinking about the upcoming 330Ci, (coup?, E93?),
to be my next car in 2007.

Edit: It would be the E92 coup? not the E93 cabriolet!

I also have a 05 545 and a 06 330. I enjoy the nimbleness of the 330 but sorely miss the power of the 545. I do think the 330 looks better in the garage next to my 545i.

My suggestion is also base on his wife and 2 kids, and when his kids become bigger kids...
Not everyone can change car as frequently as you do (in a good way )

I get so easily bored...

A E61 should be the ulimate family car (with two kids). If one
really needs the space the E91 is not a option.

But two kids (even teenagers) fits also great into the coup?
which really is a four person car, not a 2 + 2.

I suppose the new E92 will have a near to 450 liter trunk.

I was set on getting an E90. Went to the dealer and test drove a E90. I liked it. Then my father who was with me said since we are here why don't you just test drive an 5 Series. Needless to say I left the dealership with an E60 and love every minute of it.

Did he pay for it also?

I upgraded from an E46 325i (2003) to a 2005 E60 545i about 6 months ago. I have 3 young kids. I liked the E46 but found it too small for my needs. I don't drive other people around very much but when I did it was embarrasing to have to cram them into that small back seat. The 5 is much roomier in the back, but it's still a relatively small car and certainly does not drive like a bigger car than the 3. The only down side was the cost, obviously the 545i was over twice as much.

No.....unfortuantly not But I'm much happier with making the choice I did. I think I would have regretted it down the road. During the test drive the E60 just drove the way I always imagined a BMW would drive.
