I believe the EPA rating for the 335 (same engine you're talking about) is 22 and 29. So essentially the same fuel economy as the current 530, but with alot more fun. All the mags are reporting very little turbo lag.

Please forgive me is this has been discussed before. My lease will be up about one year from now, and I'll be leasing an'08. Will BMW NA no longer be offering us the normally aspirated 255 HP engine? Will our choice in sixes be limited to the 535i and 528i as is the case with the 3-Series? I would much prefer the non-turbo 255 HP six, but it looks as though we here in the U.S. we will continue to be limited in engine options if this is the case. Thanks!

They are reporting virtually no turbo lag!
That's why I'm reserving judgment.

530i not in US anymore? And 535 here in the US? How come I don't see it in the website?
These are the changes reportedly coming for the 2008 model year.

IMO and i'm willing to bet on it no turbo car has no lag at all. I mean yeah when you first test drive a car like this with the new technology and TT setup then you might feel no turbo lag but in time i am sure you'll feel it as you get used to the car.
The same as with the 997 TT. Even though it has VTG at it's side, i am sure there still is some lag left.
The same i felt with my 535d, at first i said wooooow almost no lag, but now i know exactly how much lag there is and it is quite some.
It will be imo impossible for a turbo engine to have the same response as a NA engine. Simply because there needs to be some time before the turbine blades are spooled up, so 1st you have to give the car more juice, then the extra exhaust gases come throw the turbines and once the turbines are spooled they start to feed the engine with forced air. So unless maybe they make a turbine that's always spolled up at quite some high rpms (which i don't see it happen) so that the boost will always be available...untill then NA engine will always win in response.

I actually like a well designed turbo, and it looks like BMW is doing it right with twin turbos of light weight design. There advantages and disadvantages to each. But, with my other cars being turbos, I am enjoying the I6.

The cost to certify the engines is probably the reason we don't have as many options in the US.

[snip] So unless maybe they make a turbine that's always spolled up at quite some high rpms [snip]
Small, low inertia turbo "always" up and running for small volumes; when that runs out of puff, the large higher inertia turbo has enough power to push in the greater volumes of air required. I don't see how further to reduce lag - unless we use a supercharger and then a turbo, but then efficiency probably goes to pot.
[OT] BTW - I don't agree with your assessment of lag on the 535d. Coming from an E39 V8, the 535d significantly outperforms it in terms of readiness to push in all gears (without downshifting/kickdown) and at all rpm (OK, not from 4000 up!). What lets the 535d down in my view is the gearbox, which is slow(ish) to react and obstructively nannying when used in "manual" mode. Plus, it occasionally slams. [/OT]
Back to the thread: not sure why this choice has been made. It makes no sense to me, especially if both engines will keep being offered in the 3er

Not into READING are we? The car makes FULL boost at 1300rpm.
Tell me if a N/A N52 is making 300 ft/lbs of torque at 1300 and you tell me which car would be feel more responsive.
