Just a few days ago, I noticed that my onboard computer would slowly rack up the numbers whenever I was idle at a stop light. While driving, it would stay at whatever number it had risen to.

What's wrong with my E60?! This is totally weird!

Here's a pic of it at 26.6l/100km!! (sorry the pic is sideways, I'm using a Mac)

is the car consuming too much fuel? , idrive messed up? or is the mpg all wrong?

Let me know, maybe we can help.

I don't think it's consuming more fuel.. at least not from what I can tell... I do think
that the iDrive might be messed up but also am not sure. All I know is that the mpg
numbers are way off.

Just that it happened last night and it's really weird... Taking it to the dealer's first thing
Monday but thought I'd post and let everyone see the 26.6L/100KM 520D!

Also was wondering if others have had similar readings as well....

OK, as an expert on high petrol consumptions , I can clearly diagnose the problem as you being too lazy to walk With an average speed of 6,9 km/h, you are fast as you could be if you walked, so no wonder the petrol consumption is that high.

otherwise, at low speeds, the numbers the computer provides are not realistic. They really have some sense once you have covered a decent distance with a decent speed of atleast higher than 15-20 kmph....

Ok, firstly - what type of engine have you got... If it's an M5 that's probably pretty good consumption!
Secondly - I did not realise Mac's were unable to rotate images, must remember to tell the graphic artists to switch to Windows asap!

Engine: 520D

Speed: the figure on the computer monitor fluctuates accordingly.... when i took the picture, i was on the side of the road waiting on someone when i first noticed the 26.6L/100km so that's why it's 6.9... But even after driving on the freeway for 1/2 an hour, it's still unreasonably high. It used to be around 8 - 10L/100km from the time I got it until last week which is about 2 months' worth of driving.

...but the 6.9 really represents the average speed, which really means that the computer was just resetted and therefore the consumption is that high. i have the same - i could take pictures of the idrive with 39,5l consumption, this happens right after i reset the computer..

I have the same engine in my car, and for me it's impossible to have a consumption higher than 20l/100km, even when accelerating. Typical consumption is 6.6l/100km (city+highway), worst consumption over a few km is 15l/100km, even right after a reset. Driving on cruise control on a 100km/h road gives me 5.5l/100km or better (according to the car, which is ~5% optimistic compared to real consumption).

Even when driving at top speed continously for a long time (which I do sometimes on the A31, an almost empty autobahn close to my home) it's 15l/100km max.

I think the commonrail system and the injection system of the 520d are not even able to inject more fuel into the engine than a value that corresponds to ~25l/100km (when driving obviously).

This must be an iDrive fault or you have a serious issue in your engine management.
