Only way to avoid it is to get non-staggered wheels, which IMHO look way more crappy than a staggered setup.

Understeer has nothing to do with your tires, stiffen up the rear suspension - either via coilovers or a bigger sway bar, and you'll eliminate the understeer the factory put into your car. Bigger wheels and tires accentuate the factory understeer, so the solution is a stiffer rear suspension. In other words make your as hard.

I saw an e60 out at the mall and he had 245/35/20 and 285/30/20 Hankooks. The wheels were clearly staggered. The problem was that the front tire profile looked taller than the rear. I was looking into getting this size but now am worried. I am thinking a 235/35 or 245/30 would have looked more appropriate for the fronts if one were to go with a 285/30 rear. Good thing the guy didn't go 275/30 out back. It would have looked horrible.
Anyway, there could be a very simple answer to why they looked odd to you,the tyre pressures may have been set wrong !

If you research enough on this site, you will see these are the sizes commonly used foe 20's as well. The tires looked even where they met the road so they didn't look deflated less then each other it was the top of the tire that you could really tell.
