I am about to buy a new E60 (my first bmw!). I am trying to decide between a 2010 and 2009 model year. Which is better and why? Also, which options are the most important? Thank you for your advice.

Somewhere in 09 or 10, the idrive system was upgraded. That's about the only main change around that time period.

Given the choice, I'd go with the newer, all other things being equal...but of course, they're not. What's the price differiential? Which one in your gut do you prefer? Is one color preferred over another? I personally prefer a stick, so that would be a no-brainer. Most on this board prefer cars with the Sport package. If you live in a cold climate, you'll want the Winter package. The Premium package also gives you some nice perks, but it all depends on what your needs are. More is always better when it comes to these cars, but you generally have a price point to consider. Good luck in your decision and welcome to the board!

the 2010s are going for about $5k more than the 2009s. They are selling for about $35k with navigation and other options and low mileage (20k-30k).

Do you have experience with the keyless start? Do you recommend getting it?

Double check if you get the new iDrive. It is stated to have been changed in Jan 2009 but I have mainly seen it on 2010's. Do they both come with the M sport package?

Thanks for your reply. I am buying at auction so it depends. Is the M Sports package important? What is in it?

I just recently got a 2008 xi model. Here's what I am finding really fun... The navigation, voice control, comfort assist, heated steering wheel, AWD. Your experience may be different...but these are the things that made me smile!

Comfort Access - it's an enhanced lock / unlock system / car start that doesn't require you to insert a key or press a button on the key fob. Offered as a stand alone option for about $1000 or as part of a "package". Use this 2012 build page http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/conte...XvgMM7xFMZhUo= as a "guide" about options ... curser over the option for details ... Realize that some 2012 features operate slightly different than in earlier years.
