I too picked up a late production '08 550i Sport Space Gray-on January 2nd - and could not agree with you more. I've owned an E12, E28M5, E34M5, E39 '03 Sport and this car is just awesome. Sport-with steptronic, Comfort Access, Logic 7 with satellite, HD and I-Pod, Nav, Shades. Attachment 70240

the car probably got delivered from Long Beach BMW to Florida, because when I was there last week, I over heard the guys at Long Beach BMW about delivering a 7er at Albaquerque, NM.

I was super-happy with my loaded '06 550i until I read your post.
Well...
I had an 06 550 and now have an 08 (M5) and here are my thoughts on your comment

The i-Drive V3 is a nice improvement over V2 (the version you have). The speed is MUCH improved and the shortcut buttons are very nice (although I wish they had doubled them up - meaning one short press for shortcut#1, one long press for shortcut#2 because you always want at least one more shortcut).
The 19" tires (non RFT) are probably a nice addition - but you can add this to your 06....and you won't even need to spend the cash on the Tire Pressure Monitors

The logic 7 on the LCI cars (2008+) is reported by most people to sound worse than the pre LCI cars. Probably due to speaker locations. But sound is in the ear of the beholder and it quite possibly sounds better to jochet. In short, this should not be one of the reasons you want to move up to an 09.

The sport trans is probably a nice addition. I always had a hard 1-2 (possibly 2-3 shift since the car starts out in 2nd most of the time) when the car was cold. Annoyed the crap out of me. Also, at the end of the day, the car liked to upshift earlier that it should have - also annoyed me as it would bog occasionally. So the upgraded trans probably would be a nice addition (note I believe the trans is the same for 08/09 whether you got the sport or non-sport trans - it is just the paddles that make the sport different). PS - no, I never had my trans looked at - afraid of them tearing apart the car and making it worse.

I can't comment on the seats - but I think there was a change to the headrests sometime in 08 for rear impact protection. If you don't have the comfort seats however....well then you have no idea what you are missing

But here is the one thing that would DRIVE ME NUTS with the 08/09......
The new shifter.....
I loved the placement of the shifter in my auto 06 550 - I loved the way it worked (normal). I recently had a 528 loaner and HATED THAT NEW SHIFTER. Since it doesn't move, it is in the park position of yours - so if you like to rest your hands on the shifter while driving - forgetaboutit. It is probably something I would get used to, but man it was annoying for the 5 days I had the loaner.....

In short, I miss my 06 550. It was rare (they only made them for 6 months or so), and short of the transmission, it was just a perfect car and no way would it be worth the $25-30K to upgrade to the 09. So keep what you have....

PS - I also hate my neighbor now...who drives my old 550...

sorry, can't type or spell, I drove from Fort Lauderdale Fl. (where I live to Naples Fl) ever heard of Alagator Alley? anyway its about 130miles of straight mindless driving posted at 70MPH if you don't go 80, your pushed out of the way. I make this drive 3 or 4 times a month mostly for business, somtimes combination pleasure/business.

Can't help you with the neighbor, unless you either move or sell him your M5, as for spending $25 or $30K to upgrade from an 06 t0 an 09, that would depend on many things, for me, I lease and will continue to do so as long as BMWNA offers attractive programs, in our economy you either keep a luxury car 5 or more years or lease them. My 2007 was worth less the payoff. Buying a car off lease makes no sense, and the used luxury car market stinks which is why many companies have either discontined leasing or made it unattractive.

The 2009 E60 IMO is much improved over the 2007, maybe the right word is refined, as for the seats, yes the head rests are different, much softer, I also believe the seat cushins feel softer without being to soft, this is my 3rd car with comfort seats and these are the best yet.
