I have heard from a reliable source that the only major change for the 5 series is the navigation system when the US model changes to 2009 in March. HP is not going to change in anticipation of a higher HP engine in September, when the rest of the earth does the model change. Has anyone heard different?

I doubt the model year will change to 2009 in March. What change did you hear about re the nav system?

Updated hardware and software, probably to make it easier to use.

Why not? Both the 2007 and 2008 model years for the E60 launched in March here in the U.S. What would change this pattern now?

In both cases, BMW had specific reasons to do so. If there is no reason, they might not just do it to continue the pattern.

Let me cite the 2006 E90, introduced in March 2005 or thereabouts. The 2007 E90 came out in September 2006.

BMW does act without reasons. The LCI was issued in March 07 as an 08 to roll out the refreshed model quicker. Personally I doubt that the 09 will come out in March 2008. That is just a guess on my part. At some point in the US the model year becomes even more meaningless than it is right now. I much prefer the European approach with the hard and fast rule that the model year and the calendar year are one and the same. But that will never happen in the US.

Yeah, probably due to the fact that traditionally, most manufacturers here in the US introduce their new models in September of the preceding year. So 2008's have been available since Sept. 2007. Would put BMW at a disadvantage to be introducing their new models 90 days after the competition has theirs out.

Good point. And I think the current 7 series also is a case where the facelift came out in Spring, yet the subsequent model model year launched 18 months later (in September).

But the 2007 E60 launched in the Spring for no specific reason ... there were no changes from the 2006 model. pharding is right, "BMW does act without reasons."

Either way, if the 2009 model year comes with more power as the OP stated ... I can wait.

Actually, there was a reason. It had something to do with (trying to remember) either emissions or safety equipment AFAIK.
