Default 2009 530i E60 LCI N52 - Car is shaking at engine start and while driving

Hi Guys,

I have noticed that my car's engine start up sound is bit louder than before and car shakes maybe for 15 seconds. It wasn't doing this before. Rev is usually a bit above 1k then settles within 2-3 minutes. (living in Sydney, AU). Milage is 110.000km

Another issue that I have noticed is car noticably shakes-vibrates while driving first 10-20 minutes and then becomes normal.

Any idea why these 2 issues are happening?

Hello, I've got a 2005 N52, I had similar symptoms occasionally and it only got worse as I was in the process of collecting parts. My transmission oil and pan needs replacing and my VANOS solenoids also are nearly done. Have you done the transmission pan and oil change? does the car drive fine afterwards, lag is due to Vanos, and the high rev and rough idle is due to transmission; for me at least. Could be something to consider for you too?

Hook the the car and get the codes. No doubt something is there for you to see.

I bought the car at 108,000km and just done 2000km on top of it. According to log book there is not indication of trans pan/fluid change. Something to do I guess.

Noisy start (not too much but not regular) settles down within 20-30 secs.
Shaking/vibration while driving settles down within 5 minutes.

twh has the right idea, see what codes you get, I overlooked that because I never got any errors with mine but the problem was there alright. I use INPA to get codes, program can be bought off ebay, or found online? (not sure on this) You'll need the OBD II cable to plug into your port in the driver side nearfront footwell area.

This is around about the time the pan and oil is due for change. Although don't take it to dealers they'll only use same fluid since it's 'lifetime' fluid; probably why its not in the logbook. Best to get parts from US and diy or let a BMW specialist or Euro equivalent shop do it.

It sounds like trans being possible cause but codes can confirm

I have INPA NCS BMW Tools etc. Just downloaded the other day. I am in a battle to get a success on Windows 8.1. I have the OBDII cable as well. If I cannot get a succes with Windows 8.1 then I will look for a spare laptop with Windows XP.

Could anybody tell me how to read codes in INPA?

Depending on your version, here's a quick vid showing how mine works. This was without the car, with the car you'd have battery and ignition on to read codes.
