... Conversely, the old iDrive (which I generally like) is a dead end as far as updating your car as time passes.
I actually talked w/ my dealership about that very thing. I was told that BMW will still continue to produce software updates for the current iDrive for a few more years. Who knows? Maybe we'll eventually get the look but not the "feel" of the new one.

All they'll do is fix problems.

As soon as the new one is on the market we're done.

It does makes sense.

They don't need two different controllers anymore.

They start using the new one this year allready. So they don't need to have two different ones. All get the same.
Much easier for them.
The buttons will work, so the new MY gets a little improvement.

But not the new iDrive software.
And not the new iDrive (note spelling) hardware either. Please, let's stop confusing the new controller with the new iDrive hardware.

WOW! Were you allowed to post that? That might have sabotaged your sales for 2009 5 series... some of us might have been misled and bought a 2009 thinking it was "new" although would become an unhappy customer but none the less bought a 2009 5 series. hehehe J/K the chances of that happening would have been slim.

Thanks for the clarification.

You better appreciate BMW's honesty, don't tell me you prefer apple slogan "half the price, twice the speed"
for a crappy iphone that is doubled the price and half the speed.

As I said:

They're just changing the plug 'n play mouse.

Has anyone specifically asked their dealer what it would cost to change out the controller? Regardless of cost are they willing to do it?

I have been reading this thread and being a newbie to BMW bought my car three weeks ago (2007 525i built 01/07)
I was wondering what idrive/controller I have and how does this affect me?

You have the old one.

It works, there's no "need" for the new one.

Buying a new 2009 5 series is like buying a new computer with DOS, while all the other computers have switched to Windows (e.g. 1, 3 and 7 series). This has got to hurt the E60 sales until the F10 comes out.
Then again, no one appreciated XP until Vista arrived.

Well, I think the correct computer analogy would be between the original e60 iDrive (2004-2007)/ Windows XP, compared to the LCI improvements to the original iDrive/Windows Vista. The new hard drive based iDrive is a huge technological improvement over the old iDrive. If you are as old as I am, you'll remember when computers ran from floppy drives (1.4 M, and now of course 100 GB hard drives are common. Think about the old iDrive as a floppy drive, and you'll get the picture.

I still think there is a good chance that the e60 (and X5) will come out mid model year 2009 with the new iDrive. If that happens, anybody knowledgable about computers and cars who buys a new e60 now will be kicking themselves big time !
