A very respected person at my dealership was at the ride and drive just last week, and drove the two back to back. He says a full second seperates the two and it FEELS like more than that.

I took a 335 home for the weekend and drove it a lot. It is awesome, but sure didn't "feel" like a sub 5 second car. Handled like a go cart though.

What on earth would anyone do with a 400hp motor? The elegance of a German car is its handling and road feel. How can that possibly be maintained when the driver is so focused on power?

I thought u guys knew everything about the e60's, how come no body ever mentioned the 2008 550i, thats going to begin production in March?
Bmw is going Turbo, the new 550i is going to have the same engine as the 545i (4.4 liter V-8), but it will a bi-turbo engine putting out over 400 hp and over 400 lbs/tq. BMW isnt just going to beat the competition, but destroy them. there also going to put the 335i engine into the 5 series which is good news for the people who are planning to buy one and bad news for anyone who just bought one.
BMW POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish you were right, but there is. It is called turbocharging. In a real life situation the twin-turbo I6 put into a lighter body will be as fast if not faster that the heavier V8. 335 sedan has been tested at 4.8 sec to 60mph already. Bigger and somewhat heavier 535 will be around 5.0-5.2 sec. That's exactly where 550 is right now. BMW has to do something. A more powerful V8 will probably come sometime next year; otherwise even 0.00% financing will not help.
I have to respectfully disagree. The 535 should be roughly 200 lbs heavier than the 530i (using the 330 vs. 335 comparison) which = 3660 or 220 lbs. less than a 550. By my calculations, the 535 will be roughly 40 horsepower short of the 550's power to weight ratio (same with the ever important torque). My best guess is that the cars will be at least 1/2 sec. apart in the quarter mile. The higher the speed, the more of an advantage the V8 should have and I believe this is important to German consumers. I think these cars will have different buyers though. The american luxury/status hound wants a lazy engine that farts around town with a gramble of a V8, while the enthusiast will appreciate the lighter 535i which, as with any inline BMW 6, will probably love to rev its brains out.

My 2 Cents....

I really doubt a 550i with a 4.4 Bi turbo will come anytime soon. I think if BMW wanted to keep the 4.4 litre engine alive they would not have developed the 4.8 for the current 550...X5 4.8 or 750..... also do you guys think with the M5 being 400 bhp without the M mode, they will bring on something whcih will be cheaper and have similar everyday performance? Making the regular e60 400 bhp will mean to push the bechmark for the M5 to 500-600 bhp in non M and M mode respectively..
No-one drives their M5 around in P400 mode. Not even sure why BMW bothered having 2 power levels anyhow. Most M5's will always be on the road in P500 or P500S
