I hate to say it but I would get a 535 now over a V8 if I was in the market. VERY good bang for the buck.

Yeah, thanks for rubbing it in. When I started looking at E60's a year ago, the 545 was the top dog. Then BMW dropped the 550 into the system. Now the 335 is challenging the 550. Shoulda gotten an M5 and wouldn't be debating this....

Hahahhahah oh good I'm not the only one.

BTW, is automatic in MY 2008 different
If by MY 2008 you mean LCI then yes, entirely different - there's an automatic clutch and an improved link-up between engine and transmission which "shortens shift times by up to 50%" and "helps to cut fuel consumption by up to 3 per cent".

I have been contacting the dealer in regards to the 535i every other day. I really want to place an order but they cannot give me a payment amount because the numbers are not available. Also I was told that the tranny with paddle shifters and throttle blipping will not be available till june, so if I ordered today I will not see till august. Bummer. So i figured I will wait to see the numbers then order because it wont matter anyhow because I will have to wait. I am leaning towards the 535i because of light tuning potential and I simply cannot afford a 550i. I have my 2003 M3 and plan on keeping that. and got rid of my C32 AMG today. So my wife and I will be sharing the M3 and a Nissan Sentra for a while. Sounds silly but in time it will be worth the wait I hope. Plus I can ride my Cervelo if I need to get some coffee! I work from home , so I seldom need a car anyhow.

i have driven the 335i at least ten times. Amazing car but nothing to sweat , especially any of the 5 series. I really think the 5 is just a step above the racer mentality. Yeah I thnk tuning is nice but I think the 5 is more about styling and refinement. To put it simple, it's more grown up to me. My wife keeps trying to say " just get a 335i" but I dont mind waiting. The TT engine is great tho. and they did an amazing job at hiding the turbo sound/feel/lag. If I could choose I would certainly get a 550. No replacement for displacement. However I could order a stripped 550 ( which stil has everything - or - a nicely equipped 535i w sport and premium pkg. I think for my budget the 535i makes more sense. I figure 59k (550 min) vs 55k (535i Premium + sport)

Oh yea?? 550 550 550 550 550 550

When the '08's were announced, I got very interested in the 550i because of the sport package. Seeing the performance numbers on the 535 gave me a different perspective.

I have to drive them both and see which one I like better. Numbers on paper only tell part of the story. But it's good to discuss the issues.

BMW should have made the 550 even faster, so now its in the same position as Lexus with its GS350 and GS430. Same performance. After waking up this morning, I now conclude its a mistake to get the V8. Plain and simple. I'd wait for the sports tranny and get turbo. In my case, I'm waiting for the F10 with the biturbo V8. Yes, wait till the situation gets rectified.

Since most 550s are ordered/sold with sport package
and we now have a SERIOUS difference in cost between the 535/550 and not a serious difference in performance...
I'm betting that we see sales of the 550 drop significantly and/or some nice money factors on it by the fall - especially coupled with the fact that the 550 has significantly worse fuel economy.

For my money, while I have not driven the 535, I'm betting, I would go with the 535, especially since the aero package was never my style.

As mentioned before, the decision of 550 vs 535 won't matter to the "real world" buyers. The 550/545 has always been somewhat reserved for enthusiasts, so those sales are already lower in comparison to the amount people of buy 525 and 530's.

Yes, starting September production. Only automatics prior to then,

Huh? Where did you see that? The manual tranny is available from the start of production week 11 of 2007 (next week) I believe
