I've ordered a new 520d for delivery in January. I was wondering and cannot get confirmation if it will have the new style Automatice Gear Stick (like X5) or the old style Automatic gear stick.

I believe all new larger engine E60 automatics will haev the new style gear stick but I was told the 520d will retain the current style.

Can anyone confirm this please.

The 520d was down to receive the new gearbox in the LCI information available earlier this year... I haven't seen any other confirmation though - what does the dealer say? (I know, they're the last to know!)

I checked the Dutch BMW configurator for you, as the German one does not always show pictures correctly.

I chose a 520d with quite some options. As you can see from my screenshot, it does have the new style gear stick.



By the way: I don't want to feel sorry for myself, but I noticed that a 520d with quite some options costs over 100K euro in our country... still without sports package or individual options. That's $140K for a 4 cylinder car... same price as a loaded M5 in the US...



Coming back to the topic: I'm pretty sure that you'll get the new style gear stick with the 177ps 520d. Only the 163ps LCI 520d had the old type gear stick.

I doublechecked:

520d 163ps (both pre-LCI and LCI): Old type of gear stick (classic)
520d 177ps (LCI only) : New type of gear stick (joystick)

SAT transmission cannot be ordered for the 520d (at least not in the Netherlands and Germany)



The SAT gear stick looks like this:

I just recieved my 520i, but in Petrol and its a 170hp engine and it came with the SAT (new auto gear)... I thought they stopped making cars with the old style auto gear.. ...... Trust me, if you have an option, get the SAT, its just great and smooth, plus I love the feature that you can just press "P" on the top of the stick to move the car into park position from any gear automatically...it actually shifts automatically and puts it in park...thats cool

Remember that it puts itself into Park when you turn the engine off so you never really need to press P.
