Also, it looks like in June of 2007 they will be offering the six-speed automatic transmission with paddles on the steering wheel for manual shifting. Sure, it's no SMG but I'm thinking many automatic owners will have some fun with them anyway...
Rudy, I wonder if SMG will still be offered? The German and UK press releases mkae no mention of SMG among gearbox options. Does the Automatic Sports Transmission replace SMG?

"Gearbox choices
All 5 Series Saloon and Touring models come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox (automatic standard on 535d variants). A high proportion of customers are expected to specify BMW?s new six-speed automatic gearbox, with its new, more ergonomic, gear selector. Using upgraded hydraulics, an innovative torque converter and powerful software, the new automatic ?box responds to the slightest movement of the throttle pedal with reaction times increased by 40 per cent, and shift times halved.

Buyers of 550i, 540i, 530i, 535d and 530d models can opt for BMW?s all-new Automatic Sports Transmission. One press of the Sport button behind the gear lever allows shifts to be made using steering wheel mounted paddles to deliver even faster, more dynamic, changes."

I hope that the SMG is still offered -- if not, then the new auto sport box better be the one that's like the DSG on the Audi's...

If not, then I'm going to have to figure out what the heck I'm going to order (deja vu all over again!)

Rudy:

When are you in the market again? My lease expires at the end of September. If I order a car to my specs, I need to decide earlier than that. MY 07 or MY 08? Will there be an SMG or not? Will there be a twin turbo 6 for the 5 series? If so, what will the performance be when remapped? So many decisions.

But, the important question is . . . What do you want? I am hoping you mak your decision first. iIknow it will be based on extensive research and full knowledge. Then I can simply follow your lead.

Presumably whatever you can get up to the limit of your budget. If you're able to follow someone irrespective of what decision they make then surely all you need to do is lease the most specced up 550i (assuming the budget won't stretch to an M5!).

M5 is out for money reasons. But with the new turbo 6 availble, and presumably easy to remap, we now have a decision to make much like the 535d v. 550 decision. Even with the money to remap the turbo 6, it will be considerably cheaper than a 550, but what will the performance difference be?

Yeah, except that this time I might have to roll some dice (and I'm not a gambler at all...)

I don't think I want to wait until I can actually drive a new sport automatic before ordering one so I'm either going to "take the plunge" and hope it's at least similar to the SMG or just play it safe and go with a manual. Right now, I'm leaning toward taking the plunge but thankfully, I don't have to decide right away...

Stay tuned!
