Thumbs up

Hi All,,, I am live at Canada-Ontario, just bought a new 2007 525i with base suspension... ie.. tire is regular 225/50/17. I plan to purchase a set of Wheel and Tire for Winter,,, So I am confused on FTM vs TPM ? My i-Drive showed I have FTM, being search at this forum, some say I will need a special valve stem installed at the new wheels.. If I need those, how much will that be ? I plan to use some aftermarket wheels... Also, what's the difference between FTM vs TPM ? Thanks for help out !!

I know for sure that you don't need anything, just the additional set of wheels/tires. BMW, to my knowledge does not requires a sensor in the wheels/tires to work and apparently measures this by the wheel rotation and please other forum members correct me if I'm wrong. Apparently FTM is different from TPM because TPM does have a sensor on the wheel and it can monitor the actual tire pressure, I believe Mercedes-Benz have this functionality.

Just like the last poster said. FTM only monitors loss of pressure in a tire through tire rotation and doesn't have an actual sensor system. TPM uses a sensor and monitors the actual tire pressure vs. a simple loss of pressure. The only requirement is to recalibrate the FTM system in i-drive after changing or inflating tires.

Canadian spec cars must be different from US spec
My 07 525i does have the TPM and requires new sensors
This is new for 07 model for US spec car, 06 and before have the FTM I think.
My car now with after market wheels have this TPM warning everytime I start up my car, oh well...

I know i have the TPM in my car for a fact. I have a 07 550. Just bought new wheels and tires and I had to get the sensors which cost me about 40 bucks a piece. Each tire is individually monitored for a change in pressure.

The sensors screw into the back of the valve stem and sit on the inside of the wheel.

TPM also tells you which tire is off vs. FTM which just tells you there is a problem, I don't think it is tire specific on the monitor.
