Default 2007 BMW 550I tail light question

i notice there are two round inner sections with bulbs in my tail lights that don't seem to be used. not for parking lights or brake lights . my question si what are they for? owners manual said somthing about emergency brake lights? what do they mean??

or are they both lit up for rear fogs like my audi? doesn't seem that BMW offers that in the US model but is that what they are for?

They are rear fogs. In the Euro E60 they have a switch to turn it on. Seems that BMW decided that American's can't handle that responsibility, hehe.

If you ht your brakes very hard they will light up....kind of an "Oh Sh*t!" for the person behind you...

Can someone confirm this?

Looking through the coding on stock LM2 for LCI tails, this isn't suppose to happen. BFD on E60 by default doesn't work like that for rear fogs... HOWEVER, it can be coded.

Page 99 of the owners manual describes "Brake Force Display" during which, under normal braking only the outside brake lights come on and during heavy braking both the inside and outside brake lights come on.

What constitute heavy braking? Is it the amount of force you apply to the brake pedal? Just curious to know.

The owners manual does not say. That would be my guess though. Maybe have a buddy trail along the side of your car to watch and hit the hooks a couple times to see how much force you need in order for those to come on. I just checked and there are quite a few examples on Youtube. Look up "e60 Brake Force Display"
