Not to piggyback, but I'm also wondering about a 2006 530xi.

I've seen numbers of 255hp and 272hp. I wonder which one is accurate. Perhaps the higher number is a Euro tune versus the American tune?

255 US horsepower
258 euro calculated HP

Both are equal just slight different calculation

272 is the 2008+ 530's that were only available in Europe-they basically are direct injection versions of the engine in your car which gives it that extra HP

not to butt in, but im almost positive the 07 530xi has 268hp /232 torque, if i am correct they are the n52 engines and the euro would be the 272, to sum it all up it was 2007 that they put DI versions i think

EDIT: us version valvetronic w/regular injection (n52)
uk version DI

wow, shocking that people dont even know what hp their engine has and are on a bmw enthusiast forum. You can pretty much google this so no need to argue but I assure you 06 and 07 N52 530/330 had 255 hp. 268 existed nowhere. As already mentioned the euro version those years had 255 us horsepower as well but on euro sites its stated as 258 per their different measurement conversion from KW.

The DI version in Europe and UK? Has the same basic engine but has DI and some other tweaks and is renamed the n53. This came out in 08 in europe and has 272 Euro HP-which is like 269 US horsepower.

I'm new around here but I've read that the latter US version of the 530 produced 255hp....

It also appears the 535 puts down 300hp...

If that's right, why would they go to the trouble of twin turbos and HPFP for 45hp????...seems like a waste of time. Isn't there someway to make more ponies with the 530 so as not to suffer through the short comings of the 535??? Or, are my hp figures wrong....

No car maker strives to push their motors beyond the point where it will decrease its reliability. Remember the S4/Audi A6 2.7TT? Bad arse cars, only made 255HP, blast to drive.

BMW now have gone to a single turbo after all the headaches with the 535 twin turbo. There are many reasons why 2 smaller turbos are better fundamentally than one large turbo, mainly they spool up faster(less turbo lag) and can crate greater torque gains lower in the RPM range, but BMW's issues with that engine may have just been clearly an engineering one.

The engine was used across various platforms before being thoroughly tested on each variation long term, it seems, with forced induction not being their forte in their mass production model lines in the past. Personally i prefer NA motors in my every day cars, its just less moving parts that wear and tear, and ultimately less to worry about out of warranty.
