Hey Raj,

Thanks for the feedback. Have you ever changed the water pump on an E60 N52? Also, do you know where the thermostat is located? I could figure it out, but if I could be pointed in the right direction. Is it on the passenger bottom side (I'm presuming towards the front/radiator) like the water pump?

This has to be one of the easiest jobs to do on a E60 N52. With the belt driven waterpumps, you needed to remove the radiator fan, all the accessory belts, the pulley and only then would you be able to get the waterpump out. Why not just do it yourself? It would be much easier and cheaper. Get the parts at the discounted price and take a crack at it.
The waterpump is on the bottom, on the right side of the engine block on the passenger side. I expect it to be mounted by a couple of mounts and there are snap hoses attached. I would say no more than 1 hr work.
Good luck.
Raj

640 for a belt replacement. I know these cars are amazing vehicles, but how much was the part? Isn't this belt just a traditional tensioner pull and pop sort of deal? Seems like an absurd price unless you have to remove accessories to get to it.

hey, just the belt on my m5 was 640 for the water pump belt and install. i'd say 800 isnt terrible these cars are expensive to maintain.

Honestly I didn't even check the price of the belt, yes I'm sure its nothing special. But there's a lot to remove to get to it and they are also aligning my pulley's while they are at it. If I wasn't in such a rush I would have shopped around but I'm stuck in florida and need to drive up to ny so I had no choice. Just one of those situations.

Sorry to hear that! It does happen though. I've lost trannys in the middle of a 1400-mile drive on one of my old vehicles. That sucked. Pardon my lack of eloquence.

Hey guys,

Recently received an overheat warning on my iDrive (thanks for the lack of gauges, BMW!) - pulled over immediately - towed to my buddy who is a tech at a dealer who diagnosed for me for $50 that I had a faulty electric water pump. I want to replace both the water pump and the thermostat. I can't find a water pump ANYWHERE besides the super-expensive BMW part version - I am a new owner, is this normal? I see water pumps for the prior generation (belt-driven, not electric) from third party dealers, and much cheaper. Would I have any luck looking at junkyards/salvage vehicles for this part? All I need is the pump - the thermostat I'll buy from the dealer, as it's not super expensive (~$100).

The friend is offering to get me the water pump for $300, the thermostat for $100, and fix them for $400 for a total of $800. This is a heavy chunk of change for me to swallow considering I've replaced water pumps and thermostats on other vehicles for nowhere near this amount of labor. Does anyone have any insight as to whether this is a terribly high labor charge for the work completed and if the parts are possible to find elsewhere?
What it comes down to, these are expensive vehicles to own and maintain and nothing should come as surprise. There are lines in your tachometer that indicate water temperature. When the engine is running at temperature, there are only 3 lines. When the engine is running cold and it's warming up, there are about 8 lines (I haven't counted them), and I am assuming that if the engine is running hot the lines will disappear? Maybe others can chime in?

I appreciate that and will keep them in mind. The more I think about it, the more I think I'm going to trust in the genuine BMW parts - and the serviceman. It would come brand new, and with a 2-year warranty. After calling around, the $400 for water pump + thermostat labor doesn't seem that bad, considering the price on the water pump is a steal at $300 for a brand new one.

Yes I do know where it is. I recently had to change the radiator on our N52 E60 and saw the waterpump housing. It seemed very easy in comparison to a standard belt driven waterpump. I would say, at max 1 hr labor after lifting the car.
Regards.
Raj
