Default 2005 E60 Fault Codes

A couple of days ago I went to start my 2005 E60 and got the "electronic system malfunction" message, along with the iDrive saying the wipers and cruise control were malfunctioning (easy to know as the wipers kept turning on).

I pulled 24 codes, 13 of which were K-CAN codes. I've checked the battery and alternator and both seem to be running fine, leading me to believe I have a faulty module. I'd greatly appreciate some guidance as to which modules to look at first and how to test those modules. Some reading has indicated the BCM/KGM could be a place to start, but I was hoping to get some more direction.

I can post all the codes if helpful. Thanks in advance.

Did you try and code or upgrade something. Your CAN BUS is having an issue. Recommend clearing codes and see which ones come back. You have a lot of not present ones. Do you have ISTA?

The MPM was replaced and coded in November by a shop, but I haven't had any issues since then. The new battery was also registered at the same time.

Today I had to move the car in the driveway so I could work on my van, and no messages from the iDrive. I'm going to clear all the codes and see what comes back. While it's nice not to have the problem, now I'm in the situation of knowing there is an issue but it not being present to diagnose. All I did was wash the car and remove all the leaves from under the wipers, including under the cabin air filters. Perhaps it was just mad at being so dirty. 😀

I don't have ISTA, but when I take my van in for an alignment on Friday I'll speak with the shop about next steps.

Did you get anything wet under the hood while cleaning. This also could be a ground issue somewhere.

I don't think so, but maybe. It was mostly removal and wipe-up, then install. As soon as weather permits I'll go over it in more detail.

Thank-you for all the responses and ideas. I greatly appreciate it!

Today I cleared all the codes and re-scanned. Got the following codes:

SMBF Seat Module Passenger
E484/present SMBF: K-CAN line fault

DWA anti-theft alarm system
D944/present DWA: K-CAN line fault

IKHA Integrated automatic heating/air conditioning
9C54/present IHKA: AUC sensor

I haven't driven the car yet, but perhaps more codes will show. Not sure if this narrows it down or not, but good to see less codes. I'll check for more codes after my next drive.

The AUC sensor means you just need to replace it. It's up to you if you want to.

I want to see if any other codes comes back on the CAN bus because the other 2 would indicate that there's an issue with those items. My DWA had the same fault and I just needed to switch out the battery that was in it.
