Default 2005 BMW 530D Smoke

The car has always had a strong odor coming from the exhaust when idling. When accelerating the exhaust shoots out white smoke. Any ideas or common issues that might relate to this?

Honestly you're probably in over you head with diagnosing this if you don't know what a smoke test is. It's pumping smoke in your intake and checking for leaks. You'd also have to do tests on the injector and coolant system to narrow down the cause of it. You probably don't have the tools to test your injectors or to see what they are doing while the car is running. If I was you and if you have the money to possibly waist I would just replace the PCV system and see what happens. I'm sure it hasn't been replaced in a long time. With testing the coolant system only you know if the engine has over heated or possibly not if you purchased it that way but the smoke smelling sweet and you having to top up the reservoir is an indication of a cracked head. At this point I don't know how else to help you with this issue as you're going to have to run some tests to isolate the problem. You also own a diesel and that adds another possible potential problem.
