2005 545 with auto trans. 3 times when slowing down from about 50 to maybe 10 then hitting the gas the trans is like in neutral between gears. engine free revs, then slams into gear. This happened 3 times over the last 4 days. took it to the dealer. they could not replicate and then I took them for a drive; could not replicate. anyone have any similar type of experience??

I dont know I never drove your car but it seems like your clutchs need to be changed
milage and describing your driving style can help ?

68,000 miles; mostly high way commuting.

Would it be sporadic or predictable? Right now it's been very sporadic.

Not sure about it, I remember my dad 740il did the same and the workshop said clutches need to be changed
well try to go to any bmw workshop to diagnose your trans sometimes a loose wire can mess the gear changes and your milage isnt high to fade your clutches
also let them to check your transmission oil level if it's low it makes your trans to act weird

one more question
do you feel any delay when its time to shift to higher gears?

Before you spend the $$ for a new tranny, go ahead and flush the tranny fluid along with the diff fluid. Gear slipping in an automatic transmission is a sign that the viscosity in the tranny oil is next to nill. Which means it's running like water and not like oil. Try the Redline brand of tranny and diff fluids. Also, it wouldn't hurt to do the 25-sec transmission reset to clear the memory in the computer. You can search for that in the forum.

Better yet,

During normal and aggressive driving it does not slip. And if you hit the gas and make it down shift, no problems. In driver sport mode, good strong, quick shifts. Fluid level is correct.

The only time I've had the problem, which is sporadic right now, is when slowing down and then hitting the gas again. Like slowing down from about 50 to make a left hand turn, not coming to a complete stop, and then hitting the gas to make the turn. If I come to a complete stop, it seems to be always fine. If it's a slower transition between slow down and go - fine. It' like the transmission is downshifting from the higher gears and I catch it between gears and it spins freely; then slams into gear. It's not dropping into first and just revving high, it's actual free reeving that drops into gear really hard. Like you we were sitting still in neutral running the revs up to 4 grand and then dropping it into drive hard.

This has happened 3 times over the last few days. I can not seem to make it happen at will and it's gone a few days now where it has not happened at all.

Does that sound like clutches or electronic? If it was weak in the other shifts or slow to react all the time, i would be more inclined to believe fluid was low or some other fluid related issue.

Thanks for the help.

I dont think its your clutches because its sporadic and no delay in shifting Ill say change your tranny fluid first
the only things go wrong in auto trannys are tourqe converters or clutches, try to reset your trans.

There is well known issue with tran downshift that bangs. This is problem with software and nothing else. Dealer will have to upgrade software and you should be fine. I had the same and it's gone. They will charge you $250.00 but make sure you tell them also enable mp3 as well while doing that. I will look for SIB and post here.
