My local BMW dealer has this CPO Alpine White 05 545 with 36K on the clock, fully loaded perfect condition. NAV and everything. The advertised price is $36K. Based on my feeling this car is priced way to high, I am planning on asking $31K or $32K out of the door and that should include tax, fee and everything. Well, about the MPG. I am concerned too. I commute 50/50 and dont want low teens on MPG. 18 or above is acceptable. I really would like to hear some more comments. I am patient. Thanks.

jesus everytime i see what other people got for their cars i'm depressed.

i bought a late model o4 545 with 38k miles on it. fully loaded..literally has every option but the massage chairs for that year. i purchased it with cpo for $37,850 exactly one year ago.

i get 17mpg in the city and when i was driving 50 miles to work on the freeway, i was averaging 26mpg.

Have you checked Kelly Blue Book or Edmunds?
As a point of reference, in this month's Roundel magazine there are three 2004 545i models for sale (no 2005 models). The prices are $31,000, $31,900 and $32,000. Two of them have an extended warranty but they did not state if they were CPO models. The miles on each car is 57,000, 27,700 and 49,000 respectively. So a little more for a 2005 model would be reasonable.

I normally fill my tank when it gets down to about a quarter of a tank. My manually calculated gas mileage is between 19.9 and 25 mpg which includes a combination of city/highway driving. The on-board computer calculated the gas mileage at 21.1 and 26.4 respectively.

Not targeting your post but just my general statement:

The official figures show the 530 being only about 1mpg better than the 545... so many people act as if the extra 2 cylinders will eat up 10 more mpg compared to the I6 or something... and say they wont get the 545 because they want to save gas. This was back in 2005 ish...

MPG: I have a manual and one thing for sure is, my computer mpg calculation is way off - high by about 6mpg. My computer is usually saying 28mpg combined - which is way wrong. On a trip it will say 30 - 31 mpg. This was with the stock rims/tires before I changed to the 19's.
I bet your computer is set to calculate british MPG rather than U.S. MPG. My computer was set up this way when I got it, and it showed that I was getting like 27mpgs. I changed it to U.S. spec, and now it shows 21.5. There is a way in IDrive to change the way it's calculated.

Wife's 2005 CPO 545I Automatic with 27,000 miles was on the BMW site at $40,900 but the dealer had it on their own website for $36,900. We were able to get another $600 off for a possible bad battery and how far we went to get it (300 miles in our '95 540i). This was in late March and I really still don't see 2005 CPOs for less than $ 37k with that low of mileage on the BMWUSA CPO website.

With her commute of in town driving, the OBC tells us mileage is around 20-22, but manual calc shows about 1.5 mpg less at each fill up. On the interstate between St. Louis and Nashville, a tank was indicating between 30-31 all the way but the calculator tolds me 28.5. Lowest mileage calculated has been about 18.5 in 3 months that we've had it.

It's a deal if you think it's a deal because it may be the perfect combination of colors and options that you want that somebody else might not find to their liking.

In my opinion finding a CPO or at the very least one still with original maintenance plan would be the way to go. During last week's scheduled oil change, I asked them to check the brakes because they sounded like a seal being clubbed seal. I get it back in the afternoon with new brakes all around. At no charge.

is it really only 1 mpg? i thought it was 3. even though if its only between 1-3 it can start adding up. If it were only really 1 mpg i would've gotten my self a 545i instead of my 530i. i did my research on MPG before i bought my E60 and went with the 530i b/c i hoped to have better MPG but it's still not that great.

... I'm getting 19.25/25 with regular and probably 21/28 with premium. I've been driving pretty conservatively of late because of gas prices though.
Seriously? you put regular unleaded gas in your 5er?

I'm not trying to pick on you, but I just had a similar discussion with someone else about why gas mileage difference of a couple mpgs simlply is not that big of a "savings" to justify buying a particular car. I have heard lots of people say "I wanted a 545, but I didn't want to spend the money on gas, so I got a 530."

Let's say you drive 12k miles a year and that a 545 averages 22mpg (like mine does in mixed driving) while a 530 averages 25 mpgs. The 545 would use 545 (no joke) gallons of gas per year, while the 530 would use 480 gallons. At $4.45/gallon (for premium here), that would be only $289.25 more to drive the 545 for an entire year than the 530.

Even if the 530 got 5mpgs better (or 27mpg overall), it still would only cost $437 per year more to drive the 545, which is an extra $36/month.

To me, if you can get 22mpgs out of a 545, I would only consider buying another car for the "gas mileage advantage" if either (1) the alternative car got at least 40 mpgs or (2) the price of gas was $10 or more per gallon.
