The turbo has gone on my 2004 530d, I have 2 possibilities for replacement:

1. Genuine BMW parts
2. BTN Turbo

The price difference is just over ?300

Any recommendations or experience of this problem?

Have you gone to your local BMW dealer and asked for a goodwill gesture, if the car has Full BMW history, you've got a good case.

You'll also get 2yr warranty if BMW do it.

sorry not sure what turbo is best. how many miles had you 530d done.
did you check the engine breather, they say if blocked can lead to permature failure of turbo. and how ofter was the oil changed.
i would say get an independant bmw specialist to do the work as dealer charge ?120 or so an hour.
good luck . there are a few post on here with same problem as you.

Where do you live? You should change dealer! Don't pay anything near that down here.

56k Miles
FSH, next oil service due in approx 5k & microfilter in about 2k
Nothing displayed on the dash at all & no errors on the i-drive

Full dealer history in the first 3 years, independant thereafter. I was thinking of contacting BMW but was unsure how to go about it as the car is in a local garage at the moment. From what I've read seems a fairly common problem around this mileage!!

I don't know much about diesels, but if you can use this situation to get more performance out of the car, I say do that.

GL with fixing it! Keep us posted

hi... i have 2003 530d e60 and the swirl flaps fell into the engine, the main dealer took the car in and did the job . thay also replaced the turbo and manifold as thay are prone to cracking.. thay did the job as a goodwill geasture think in total it came to 8k i payed ?1500.. my car had 93000 with full history so you should try to get them to pay towards doing it as you have way less miles than me & at the same time replace the inlet manifold as thay have modifiid the new ones with plastic swirl flaps that dont destroy you engine when thay fall off, and its only a mater of time b4 thay do....... steve

That is very odd indeed as you usually get some kind of warning, IMO i would buy the OEM if BMW are fitting!! im shocked really as your milage isn't exactly high!!! I would imagine it being miles cheeper at a indipendent garage and if it was me i would follow that route if not covered by waranty!!! 56K is no milage at all especially for a diesel!!!!

Contacted Sytner in Leicester today & asked for a good will gesture towards the repair, they told me I would have to book it in so that they could look at it & to bring along the diagnostic report from local garage; ok I thought fair enough only to be told September 1st is the earliest they can look at the car due to staff holidays!!!!

Not happy I called Sytner Nottingham & was told bring it in & they will look at it straight away & that they can start work on it on Monday, what a difference. Only problem is I will have to get the car towed in.

Anyway question is what are my chances, the car has full history 1st 2 stamps are a dealer the rest independants. Do I go to the stealer & wait out for a good will gesture or cut my losses & leave with the local garage to be repaired?
