If I was going to put that kind of money into a car, I would start with a good car that did not have any potential problems. On second thought, I would just put the money into an M5 that I could possibly get it back out.
+1, if you are going to buy a car for $18k and put $40k into a supercharged engine, then you may as well get a used M5, which you sure could buy for less than $58k.

$40k for a supercharger.......sucker deal. If your going to go it right you might upgrade the engine and then upgrade to a supercharger/turbocharger, oh almost forgot the tranny all by a custom tuner and still a ton left.

In regards to the $18k great price if the car is worth it. You might want to see if you can get someone to check the vin through a BMW dealership to see if it has had any major repairs, and have an independent check the car from top to bottom. I'm sure some members here could steer you in the right direction for finding an independent in the area.

Yeah, as I said it is a perfect car for any performance project whatever supercharged, turbo, etc... you list.... if it is in good shape of course.
