I'm sure this has been beaten to death and please redirect my newbie post here if I'm being redundant.

I have just taken ownership (from a family member) of a 2004 E60 530i (production date 11/2003). It's a NON-NAV iDrive system, pre-wired for a CD Changer, but I do not have the CD Changer. After some poking around, I accessed the secret iDrive menu and discovered that the unit is a JAN 9, 2006 build, CIP 21.00.00 (06-03-510) - service records indicate that the TCU was replaced in JUN 2006.

I am told that the iPod adpater interface for iDrive control is available for this, but I can not seem to get much information on how it is installed, what other charges are required (programming from BMW), and just how it works?

Any information would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Usually, BMW dealerships charge for coding, hardware, and labor, which comes to about $800. If you can get a iPod interface, all you need is the coding, some dealerships offer the coding seperately, which usually costs $150-$250, depending how greedy the dealerships are

RIGHT! Been there done that. Oh, the car has an extended warranty that expires at the end of next month. I was reading bits an pieces here that stated something about no charge for "activation" if under warranty?

I wouldn't count on it... depends if the dealership you go to is nice...

Did you buy the car from them? If yes then maybe you could convince them to do a, what they call, "good will"

Had mine installed by the dealer for around $500 at the dealer, parts, labor and coding. $800 sounds WAY high... You'll have to search some but likely you'll need to have the dealer activate the iPod interface as the car does not have the 6-disc changer installed. Also dig around, there are third party options as well which offer more functionality than the OEM interface.

Thanks for the feedback, all of you. Actually, that's another good question - Dension, DICE? I don't think I can use the Dension Gateway 500 since my iDrive unit is non-Nav, just "business" model. I don't see any initial information on DICE's website for compatibility with E60's...what are some other popular options that people feel provide more and better functionality than the BMW option?

i recently got the iPod interface installed. It works (not the ideal interface) but great nevertheless! I never used my cd changer and use the ipod all the time. HOWEVER, when the dealer installs the iPod, they have to upgrade/update the iDrive system. This update significantly improved the transmission shifts and throttle responses. it's amazing the difference. I understand that the update to Idrive alone separately is around 200-300$. I have the 530 sport 2004 as well.
