My Ride: 2004 530i 6spd manual dynamic drive
Default 2004 530i catch can

Hi all, I recently purchased a 2004 530i that apparently has a remaned engine. Unfortunately after driving about ~200 miles and noticing some issues that are expected to come with an 18 year old car, my car began smoking quite a bit, and burning a lot of oil, about 3 quarts within 150 miles. I decided to install a catch can as reading through the forums it seemed like the simplest approach to fix the issue. I purchased a catch can aswell from amazon aswel as some 3/4 and 5/8 line from oriellys along with the needed adapters and a pcv valve from napa (part number #29356 if i remember correctly) After disconnecting (breaking) the former lines to and from the ccv I attached the new hoses to the old fitting which I somehow managed not to break and went along with the install, after I got both lines attached I thought I was all good and took the car for about a 3 miles drive, during this it began smoking again so I returned home and parked it for 4 days, I went back to it to it today and fired it up, hoping for something and it began misfiring very badly, I read the codes and it was a cylinder 1,2, and 3 misfire, I decided to bring it over to the shop I work at to get a better look at it, so I drove it the 4 miles over to the shop and it was very bad, it felt like I had considerably less power than my old 88 accord, once there I went ahead and looked some more on the threads and found you are supposed to cap the lines you removed from the ccv, I did not. I found I good sized cap and fit it over the plug the used to house the line attatched to the intake manifold and, voila. No more smoke and the idle is far smoother once again. I still need new plugs as I fouled mine but I am installing those tomorrow.

I have never heard of putting catch cans on a M54 or any vehicle that does not have a turbo or not a diesel. That's a new one for me. I have an 05 530i (prod. 12/04) and never once had a smoking or burning problem. I'd like to see your setup. Glad you figured it out because to me it sounds like a failed CCV or blow-by.
