Hi there,

I know that the E60 is renowned for auto errors and my car is no different (2003 E60 530i Auto). This time I managed to capture it throwing the fault whilst driving. I posted it on youtube here

This car has been to the dealer in the UK and it came back as requiring only a camshaft sensor and new thermostat, two days later it throws the same fault.

From what I can tell this mainly happens when the car is hot and under load and between 3000rpm and 3500rpm, there is also a stuttering / slight misfire feel to the engine just before it throws the fault.

The car is going back into the dealer on Monday.

Any ideas.....

When car goes into limp mode it is usually 1 of 5 things. I've had this same issue on an 03 E46 and an 02 X5, same issue. Have to pull over, shut it off and then start again. Actually sometimes it would just die out. Start with the basic and easiest thing first. Because you are not in the U.S. I can't advise on what is cheaper or what to do first.

Could be the following:
Battery: Check to make sure battery is good.

MAFS - mass air flow sensor is on its way out. normally this will give the safe mode (limp mode) on the tranny but will stay like this because its throwing wrong values to the DME.
Camshaft Position Sensor: - Car will do the same thing as above and sometimes just stall out. Usually the car stalls on take offs and limp mode issues are secondary.

Software - your drive software needs to be upgraded.

The best thing to do is diagnose yourself and come to the forum for advise on the EM (error memory) displayed.
First you would read it, clear the EM and EH (history) then fire it back up and replicate the issue.
The real EM will be the actual EM needing addressed and you can go from there.
You can spend thousands at a dealer for a possible fix or you can do it yourself and save 90% provided you have tools, time, patience. If not, then you'll have to just take to dealer, hope they figure things out on your pocket and pay. I personally don't like people guessing while im fronting the bill.

A it happens my battery died in the recent cold weather a few weeks ago, I bought a Bosch replacement , fitted it myself. On the last dealer visit I had the vehicle software updated and battery registered, I also asked for the tranny reset too. I had half an attempt to clean the MAF but may replace it for boos measure.

Car goes into the dealer tomorrow for code reading, I'll update later....

So, back from the BMW dealer with same fault stored twice ''4F8A gear ratio monitoring 4th - 5th gearshift". The dealer was referred to the 'hotline' with a diagcode : D2460_AZ600000_01_912

End result - a new gearbox is required ata total cost of £3622.

Interesting dilemma is that I bought this vehicle from a non BMW dealer so we'll see how their warranty stands up to this claim.... Not bad for a car with 65k miles.

65K miles. Aren't UK miles more than US miles? New gearbox because dealers only replace stuff not try to fix them. Even if they give a tranny it will be a refurb. Your tranny will go to ZF and they'll then "fix it" and put in another car.
