Update: 2/19/09
Got a call from the dealer that we need to put the CDC back in the car for them to code it 1st. Since I swapped the CDC with the ipod kit, they can no longer read any modules and all the modules currently show red.
I dropped the CDC off and now they will charge me that extra hr of labor to install CDC, remove it and install IPOD. The way its supposed to work, you code your vehicle while the CDC is in place, swap CDC with ipod kit and then you activate the ipod kit.
This is for the later M-ASK cars.
Hope it helps others.

Do you know of a cheaper place I can get this done? The service advisor is being very nice and is trying to see if they would do the programming under goodwill. I am now trying the mp3 doesn't work approach... Lets see if it gets me anywhere. My car is an 06, which doesn't help.

It helps if you read the entire thread. Some are monstrously long, but this one isn't!

Went to the dealer with my hex key set and swapped the ipod kit with the CDC in 10 mins. They wanted 1 hr labor and kept insisting that the glovebox had to come out (so much for that). They will charge 2 hrs labor for programming at $250. My wife wants the ipod and I am better off spending the $250 than trying to waste time finding a different solution. She spends 150 miles a day in the car so I can't blame her either .
Oh well. I will let you guys know how it turns out.

Hahaha, that's awesome that you changed it out at the dealer in 10min completly CONTRADICTING their "justification" (read: LAME EXCUSE) for wanting to charge you up the ass.

2hrs to program that thing still sounds too much. I would comparing shop using the method in the above post, takes just a few minutes to compare other shops's prices around your area.

Thanks for the tip! I am not actually currently looking to add this mod but I was interested in comparing the costs of my local stealers. Vista BMW which happens to be right across the street from me has a reputation of being crooks. They want $643 for the interface plus install! Reputation confirmed! The other area stealers were around $400.
One is glad to be of service.

BTW, the nice thing about searching all the dealers' sites online is that you can order the part from more ethical dealers around the country...like this one:

Only $262 for the kit. But you still have to find a local dealer to program the car.

Im sorry but I still a little confused.

My 2005 545 has navigation and cd changer installed. It can also play mp3's. So I can purchase the ipod interface and not require programming? Also does this work with the iphone?

Thanks

If your car is an 05, you can get away with the MP3 player retrofit if your ipod doesn't work. Chances are, if your cd player plays mp3's, you are good to go.
The problem with with 06 and later cars. You should be fine.

Update: 2/20/09
Went to the dealer last night hoping the car was done. They told me that I had not had many updates in a while so its taking a long time to do all the recent updates. They gave me an 09 528i as a loaner in the meantime.
I will keep everyone updated once they are done.
Regards.

Picked up the car with the kit installed. The SA was very nice and didn't charge me for installation labor.
So, total cost for me was $250 plus tax.
Regards.

So, you paid $250 for the kit and free install? Which dealership?
