Thanks for the info. The car is booked with a local dealer so will point them in the direction of the white box.
When I removed the spare wheel I found the white box sitting in a puddle of water a third of the way up the side of the box. I opened the box to find water inside and the PCB covered in muddy sludge. Furthermore, the wires running into plug that fits in to the box are badly corroded. It must have been sitting in water for a long time. I'm amazed the I-drive hasn't stopped functioing before now.
It's a really bad design as once the water has collected around the box there is no-where for it to drain to.

Shit we've been getting bad rain the past week... I should go wrap mine in side a zip lock bag... but then again... would that overheat it?

You must have missed this particular post embedded in the links I provided earlier:

Although it doesn't explain things in great detail, it does describe how the MPM functions. (It also explains that after 9/2005 production, the functionality was integrated into a different module so the "faulty design" of locating it in an area that could get wet was remedied.)

Do you even have one? I thought that it was eliminated after 9/2005 production...
Oh really? I dunno. I know I had one in the 545... I assumed it was still there...
