I'm currently in the process of ordering a new car. I was originally considering the sensible forward planning route and going for a 525d touring, but have now decided to go for the hedonist's route with a 530d SAT m-sport (It was also the wife's idea -- she's clearly looking to smooth me up before I go get her christmas present )

Anyway, this also gives me the chance to order a new winter set up as part of the leased company car package. I do really like the look of the M135 18" rims I have in winter at the moment, but after having the M166 19" rims on my ride, the 18" rims just end up looking too small for my taste.

I am therefore looking to get a set of OEM 19" type 128 rims, 245s all round. Seeing as my 18s are 245s all round, am I correct in thinking that the 19s with 245s all round drive in the same way as 18s with 245s all round, especially in snow conditions? Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this?

Just one person's opinion . . .

I had 18-inch summer and winter wheels and tires on my 2004 E60. The traction was acceptable in bad snow, but certainly not great. My 08 came with 19-inch 172s and summer tires. I love them, but I'm going back to my 18-inch winters (Style 89s) for the next few months. I think 18s are as big as you can go for acceptable winter performance. My guess is that others would say 16- or 17-inches is the max.

damn Pete, 19's in winter !! i'm on 17's for winter

seriously though - i think you'll be fine if you restrict yourself to 245's whether it's 18 or 19...

SalesAfter.de sells the M166 8.5x19 wheels for 405 ? a piece, but the ET is 12 (does not work rear).

And what good winter tires come in the size of 245/35 19"?

So I would say, stick to the 135's in winter.

I have 8,5x18 M6 replica at the winter on my E61 520dAT. I have Nokian Hakkapelita RSi in 245/40 R 18 and i just love this tyres. The Hakkapelita RSi is one of the best winter-tyres you can get in the market. I drove with 225/55 R 16 Nokian Hakkapelita RSi at my old E60 520iA and that was just perfect.. A member in BMW Car Club Norway drive at 245/35 R 19 with Continental tyres and he like them. No problems to drive on it!

Thanks for the responses everyone.

The OEM 19" type 128 comes in 245/35/19 with an ET20 at the front, which I would use all round -- I would certainly not run 275s at the rear in winter! My current winter set-up of OEM 18" type M135 are 245/45/18 with an ET20 all round. So the width and ET value would be the same.

My assumption is that it is the "245" width which is key. If it is a 245 width on a 17" / 18" / 19", it does not make any difference -- other than to the look and comfort. Is this assumption correct or am I missing something here??
(I think Andy's response above implies this assumption is correct)

As you said at the meet in Sept, we should be a lot more daring with our mods -- just need to make sure its safe though!

thanks for the feedback

So I would say, stick to the 135's in winter.

My dealer has quoted me the 128 19s on Continental tyres. Looking at what BMW-Alpina wrote above, this appears to be a good tyre '(-thanks for the feedback BMW-Alpina). I am really looking for a tyre that is good in cold and wet conditions. Of the 20000km I do through a winter tyre period, only a few hundred will typically be in snow. So I am after a good all rounder.

As I wrote in another post in this thread, the 128 front rim has an ET20, which is the same ET value as all 18" 8,5 rims, such the types M135 / 123 / 246.

With regards to the M135s, they really are a summer wheel. Keeping them clean is not easy with all those spokes and they somehow "shrink" optically when they are dirty -- which is most of the time during winter! Still love 'em though!

S'vus xBMWx,

the way to go... 19" in winter!!!!!!

So, I am running the 19" 166 8,5" front and rear - I am using the dunlop 245/35/19 3d tires which have served the purpose very well till now. There is no difference to the 18", since I am using the same width I had on the 135" winter setup..

Go for it. This was the first year where I was looking forward to changing my summer setup to winter.

btw. if you are going for the et 12 on 8,5, you can actually go ahead with 10mm spacers. if you take 8,5 with et 20, you can even afford to take 15mm spacers..

check out my pics below for the 245" 19" winter setup..
