I know this has probably been asked before but...

I am planning on purchasing some 166 wheels and Im wondering what the largest tires I can use without problems with rubbing on a 550 isetc.

I know these wheels when used on an M5 use 255 40 19's on the front 8.5 inch wheels and 285 35 19's on the rear 9.5 inch wheels.

But I think that is too much tire for the 550. If I look at the 2008 dealer brochure for the 550 with the 19 inch wheels (172 style) they use 245 35's in the front and 275 30's on the rear.

Is that the maximum size tire I should use?

Im planning on buying Goodyear F1 GS D3 tires.

Also will I have an issue with offsets? Do I need shims.

Helppppp!!!

285/30/19 is possible with the rear. For the front stay with 245/35/19. Spacers are purely cosmetic. If you don't want to use spacers ask the seller if they can get OEM 166 rear wheels (19x9.5) with offset of 17 instead of the standard 28.

Thanks, Unfortunately the 285/30's arent available in the goodyear F1 GS D3.

I know this is the tire size M5's come with why does BMW use a smaller 19 on the 08 550?

Are they just being conservative?

285's are possible for the rear tires, but 275's are gonna be a safer bet without having to worry about rubbing under full load. 245's for the front.

Most all of the guys on this board will recommend 275's in the rear, 245's up front.

Added the 166's about 2 months ago and went with the 275/30's in the rear.

Go with the PS2's, I had the Goodyear's on my E39 M5 - the Michelins are a much better tire!

What will the 17 offset get me? Will it push the tire farther out to the fender or move it more in? Im guessing more in but isn't 11 MM alot of difference?

17mm offset with the 166 rear wheels get you a wider stance without the use of spacers. I have the 166 wheels with offset of 28mm. I used 12mm spacers to push my 166 rear wheels outward. Thus my offset is now 16mm riding on 275/30/19 tires.

Did you mean 166 in your first sentence. So 166 original wheels come with two offset sizes? Good to know...

You're right. I made the change to post #8. OEM 166 wheels can be purchase with a rear offset of 17mm.
