16.2 with Nav. Question

My Ride: E60
When you get 16.2 and now have Nav icons running down the left side of the screen, does that mean we're seeing less "map" now because of those icons? Or was that unused space previously?

I noticed it right away...
All the rage seems to be large or wide screens (like the Acura systems). And then BMW goes and takes some away. When you're talking about a screen of 4 inches or so (I don't know what it actually is) and then down 1/2", it's a significant % less.
It is only about half an inch. I just got the car so I don't know what it was like before, but it doesn't seem intrusive.
