100k miles vs 100k kms?

My Ride: '04 525i exclusive package, black saphire, beige interior, sun roof, steptronix box, stock standard
i am in south africa and the motorplan here runs for 5yrs or 100,000km whichever comes first. however i have noticed in the US, BMW offers 100,000 miles (160,000km!)why is this? is it because, fuel; roads and environmental conditions in the US are less harsher than in SA?
