Jason,
Where in Newport? I am from Newport and have never seen a station carry 100 octane and am now very curious.

I do think that there will be a few 545s doing some runs against the 550s and yours truely will be bringing along a G Meter to record some 0 - 60 and 1/4 mile times.
I thought it was a fun idea, but I wonder if it will actually happen. Other than runs from a stop, how about a few highway runs, say 2nd or 3rd gear. From a stop, it's more about the driver while the highway runs remove most of the driver error and shows the difference in the cars.

.....I hear the 2 is great stretch of road to find out.

To the original poster, 100 octane will certainly not hurt the car, but I doubt it will help that much.

Thanks Busta. I drive by that station everyday. Now has anyone ever tried it before?

My response:

Nah dont worry about 100 octane... get it if you want to try it... but dont get it cause you want to keep up. We're not maniacs... at least i'm not. you'll prob be able to beat me in a 525.

Has anyone or read anywhere of someone doing a comparison on a dyno anywhere to see what gain there is with 100?

During ED when my relative (a BMW empl) recommended filling our borrowed M6 with 100 octane Shell, his thoughts were about a 6-8hp gain.

Take it for what it is worth...

Thank you for all the suggestions and input. I am probably not going to put in the fuel, (waste of $$) I will just try to make better corners and use that almost 50/50 weight distribution to my advantage! I am still trying to clear up my schedule to make the event, It sounds like it is going to be great. I have not been a member here long, but all of you guy's are very helpful and have a lot of knowledge.

BTW the address in NB is:

Graham 76 Service
2690 San Miguel Road
NB
(949) 644-7151

You'd better be DAMNED SURE that your engine computer can handle it.

PS I believe that stuff is marketed for pre-74 engines that require lead.

No, these new 99 and plus octane fuels have no lead!

Thay are racing gasolines and can be used on any (gasoline) E60.

They give a bit more power and milage but not that much.

I.e. I drive on 98 octane all the time.

There was an article in Car & Driver about 18 months ago that explains the ins and outs of octane. As you increase octane you lower the rate of pre-detonation in the combustion chamber. Generally higher compression engines require higher octane. If too low of an octance is used in a high compression engine, you get pre-detonation (i.e. pinging) and a loss of performance largely becuase the computer has to back off the timing. After some critical threshold octane level, you won't see any more performance out of the engine. The question for the group is what is that threshold octane level?
