Default 10 MPG?? Whats going on.

Ok so i bought a 2004 530i about 6 months ago, it seems like the gas mileage just kept getting worse, at the beginning i was getting around 16-18 city now can barely hit 14 driving REALLY good. Just changed air filter. What else can i do to get rid of this horrible gas milage, and no I dont speed through lights. All feedback greatly appreciated.

air filter, spark plugs (NGK BKR6EQUP), clean your MAF sensor. 9 times out of 10 a poor running M54 can be cured by replacing the basic service parts.

good luck.

In addition to the above suggestion, check tires pressure, get rid of all unnecessary stuff from the car and trunk. Winter blend gas gives slightly less mileage [vs. summer blend].

Also, note that during winter, engine runs rich when you start until engine gets to operating temp. During summer days, engine may reach operating temp quickly; however, during winter time it can take minutes. This can contribute to less mileage. If you drive short distances during winter, the engine may not even be getting to operating temps.

You bought the car in summer. You are seeing the effects of the above mentioned items on the mileage during winter.

That is terrible! With all the above said they will clearly affect you gas mileage but with it being THAT bad I think I would take it and see if there are any defect codes stored to give you an idea of where to start. Of course if you think things like plugs and filters are old and in need of replacing do this yourself. I just returned from a short road trip in my 535 and on the highway it easily pulls 28-29 around town and highway I'm getting 25...

Tony, I think you meant to say 28-29 on highway
and 25 around town.

Ha I was just seein if you were paying attention ! Recently I spent the day at the performance center running an M3 and the mileage was 6. Not sure if it was actually less than 6 because I think this is the lowest reading. 10 mpg, there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with the OP's car.
BTW we get the day off for one inch of snow. I bet you guys up in MA would like that!
