I had an Acura that needed an entire new engine under warranty, two MB's that needed valve guide seals replaced under warranty, a Honda that needed a new head gasket under warranty and my 2004 545 SMG that needed a new transmission under warranty.
No manufacturer is beyond some reliability issues.

On cold start my engine would run (shake) roughly - 2,500km on it. Took it to the dealer and ended up with new lifters, 3 weeks in the shop (mainly due to waiting for parts). Runs perfect since the repair but major surgery for a brand new car.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets. First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.

As mentioned above, this is a "routine" issure that BMW has well under control. And it was NOT major surgery, all top-end valve train work (no digging or head removal etc.), so don't worry about re-break-in.

Back years ago, my 87 535iS had valve problems, where they replaced the entire train (removal of head etc) under warranty, even though it had just slipped past the milage when they discovered it (that's what a good dealer is all about). It was an issue of a certain batch of valves etc. And my MB befrore that had serious cam/valve train issues (among a pile of other stuff).

Now that these VANOS and double VANOS operations are here (courtesy of Honda), I'm surprised that there aren't more problems with such a complex elctronic micro-adjusted system.

Just be thankful that we've gone hydraulic and no longer have the old hard lifters (as in my 87), where manual valve adjustment was required every 8000 miles; thus a routine service (every second oil change, or about twice a year) was $350+--out of my pocket (in 1987 dollars).

Relax and enjoy it.

I wonder how that will affect your car after your 'war-ranty' is over.

Yeah, I've a got a 97 Camry, and I didn't get leather. So no leather or anything replaced yet with the odo at 115K. Let's all get a the New Camry. The back end looks like the new Lexus GS, and the side looks like a large 06 3 series.
