My Ride: 2009 535i fully loaded
09 535i hpfp recall.
Just purchased a 535i fully loaded about 2 months ago. All of sudden passing a car and the engine light came on and car sputtered. Now when I start it up in the morning it's a rough start for about 5-10 miles then smoothed out some but not fully. I'm about 200miles from home on vacation. So reading about the hpfp recall- since I bought the car used is it still eligible and where can I check the vin to find out if the car has already had the recall done. Kinda sucks only after 2 months. I'm in love with it

There is no recall on the HPFP, just an extended warranty. If your pump goes out, your car will not run or will only run in limp mode and you will know for sure there is a problem. Run your car by auto zone and get them to read the codes, this way you will have a better idea of what the problem is. Your problem could be anything from spark plus, coils, low-pressure sensor, fuel injectors etc. All of these will cause the symptoms you are describing.

Same exact thing happened to me, take the car to BMW..
You are covered for this, as mentioned above, for 10 years or 120K miles.

If you have the original fuel pump in all MY 2008 or early MY 2009 then you can have your pump replaced under the recall even if it isn't experiencing any issues. After you have the upgraded pump its only covered under the 10 year, 120,000 mile warranty if it starts having issues.

There's actually been several improvement revisions with the pumps. Bmw will not replace the pump unless it's failed. Not all original pumps have failed but a very high number have and that's why a recall was probably not initiated but rather a replacement program. I know specifically of one car that still has the original pump and several cars that are on their fourth and fifth one! It does seem that the newer pumps are holding up quite well as I have over 50k on mine. The only chance you have of getting it replaced prior to a failure would be for the dealer to agree and say that it's failed when it's really not. I doubt that many dealers would do thus.

So here is an interesting situation involving the HPFP. I have a 2008 535xi that I had delivered in Germany. I've had the HPFP replaced once (April 2012) right after my warranty expired. After brining up the SIBs to the dealer, they went ahead and fixed the pump. Only after did I find out about the new warranty. Well, yesterday the HPFP failed again. The dealer here is telling me that because I took deliver in Germany, my vehicle is not on the extended warranty. So I'm working with BMWNA to get this fixed.

That makes no sense because they didn't sell this car in Germany. It's a US. car and should fall under the US extended warranty. The regular warranty in Germany for a bmw is much less than that here. I sent you a PM.
