I just read a post on Beemerfest http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=205856

Very nice read but he talks about a new two stage intake manifold. Can anyone here elaborate. This is the first I have heard about this. I understand changes are limited to the exhaust note and supsension only.

PS. My experience with an 08 550 auto was that its power was marginally better than my 04 545.

Nope exact same power and tune minus slight exhaust and susp upgrade like you mentioned-and 30 more hp than the 545 so not a big diff but ya I am surprised they didnt even do a minor tune to up hp even 15-20 to 375ish just to post the numbers of some benefit to the 08 550 especially with the lurking twin turbo 535 lingering beneath it rather closely

Hello---I was the writer of the post.

I have driven both cars. 07550i and 08 550i There is no way in hell the 07 matches the 08. It just doesn't.

Feel test. I have a feeling the new tuning offers more power but BMW isn't rating it as such. We all know the same thing has happened with the rating of HP/Torque on the Twin Turbo 6.

I guess we'll have to wait for the magazines to test them. I'm fairly certain this car will be faster than any previous un-modded 550i before it.

Well I hope you are right. Either way, its plenty fast for me and with a better ride and short shifter, my kicks are just 5 weeks away. She is sitting at the port in BREMERHAVEN waiting to board the next ship, probably Falstaff due to leave on May 18th and arrive at PORT HUENEME, CA on June 11th

According to the new 5 series brochure's section on the 550i motor "Another power-increasing feature is a two-stage intake manifold that provides two different intake lenghths: one for low to medioum speeds and the other for high engine speeds". However, from what I can tell the 06 and 07s 550i also had a two stage intake. The 545i had a stepless variable intake length system

When I took a test drive in an 08 550 Sport a few weeks ago it felt slightly more robust than my 04 545 with a sport package. The difference felt very slight even when I drove aggressively. To me the LCI is about refinement. If I owned a 545 with the sport package, instead of leasing, I personally would not do the upgrade. My 04 545 has been a great, fun to drive, problem free car, except for replacing the door seals one time. It is also the most beautiful car made. Visually you cannot tell the 08 LCI from my 04 545, unless you really know what to look for. That said my lease is up so I will be driving an 08 LCI. To me the opperative difference is REFINEMENT.
