I am reevaluating my decision to go with the Euro Delivery 550 versus a Euro Delivery 535. Bearing in mind that the 535 with its twin turbos is rated at 300 horsepower, I am wondering whether the 550 is really worth the extra cash and the lower mpg rating? What are your thoughts?

for gas price and environmental reasons, get a smallest engine possible. 535i.

Tough choice really. I've had thoughts of getting a 535i instead of a LCI 550i or pre-owned M5 next year. Knowing that $1200 Vishnu tuning and cat-back exhaust will easily put the 535i in excess of 400 hp at the crank is too enticing to pass up.

I drove both cars two weeks ago(Loaded) and afterward realized there was no substitute for the 550 with Sport Pckg.

I personally believe the engine is faster and stronger than the 360hp BMW claims. We will see as the tests come out.

I understand about the tuning but the Twin Turbo has a bit of a lag that is not there on the 550i.

Power and modding potential aside, I think the 550 is worth the difference over the 535. The way I equip the cars, it comes out to about an $8K difference. However if you wish to get the look of the 550 with sport package, you'll need the mtech kit, wheels and tires and then the suspension for more performance. After you add the cost of these items, the difference is rather minimal.

True, but in the US the LCI has been introduced as a 2008 model. I was referring to the model year. I prefer the European approach to model year nomenclature, but it is what it is here in the US.

I agree. I think about getting a 535i sometimes. I see them, and they are nice looking. But, my problem with them is that they don't quite elicit the 5er's WOW-that's-a-good-looking-car response in me.

I also believe but not confirmed that there are a lot of minor enhancements you get with 550i that aren't published such as higher rate springs, shock valving, brake components, sway bar size, etc. It's been a while when I was able to jump from one car into another, but when I test drove a 545i it seemed to me like night and day from a 530i, not just in power but handling and braking power. I'm sure there are some modded 530i's out there that will run circles around their V8 big brother, but remember to consider the rest of the package...just my 2 cents!

I have not experienced the lag you refer to.
