08 535xi won’t start, no crank
Recently purchased a 535xi with the N54 and right off the bat it had a dead battery. Changed the battery and got it to start but then it started smoking like crazy so it’s now called “the fog machine”. Changed the pcv and determined that the turbos were shot. Threw in a new coil pack with the Delphi’s and one step colder spark plugs. Started it up to try and drive it around the block but after a few minutes the car died. So I pushed it back in the garage and now I can’t get it to start. I checked the fuses but all I get when I push to start is a noise from the fuel pump and that’s it. Any ideas?

See that’s what I’m thinking but it started the last few times with no problem and all the sudden when I try to drive it then it just turns off. And just now it won’t start anymore?

Just bought a brand new battery when I bought the car and it’s been cold here so I’ve been keeping it on a charger just in case it was the battery. I need to get a obd2 to check the codes and register the battery. I’ve been told you need special software to do this. Any idea what kind is recommended?

I'm up in Canada where I had a similar issue like 2 years ago in the winter.
I bought a new battery and never registered it because from what I heard, if you are swapping out the battery and its the same parameters, you don't need to register the battery.
Haven't had a problem at all since and the no start was caused by the starter motor.
This is a bit of work, but I would test the voltage coming from the battery to the starter solenoid and determine if you are getting voltage to the starter in which case if so, its definitely the starter. If no voltage is coming through, it might be a bigger electrical issue at play.

So this morning I used a tester to check the positive on the starter and there was juice. Then with another person I tested the other lead as they started the car. Sure enough when the brake was pushed and the button was aswell I got a light on the solenoid. Which if I’m correct means the starter died.
