Default 06 550i - Squealing heater fan

Hi All,

Weather just got cold here in NY and my heater fan has started to make a high pitch squeal. Wasn't an issue when the temps were 40F or above. Any suggestions to eliminate this annoying sound short of replacing the unit would be most appreciated.

Thanks! Ed

Does the fan make the noise at all speeds?

If so, then I'm sorry to say that you'll either have to learn to live with it or replace the fan assembly.

Fan only squeals at low/medium speed. It's not clear whether the squeal indicates it is in fail mode. Short of a simple remedy, it's certainly not worth spending significant $ to R&R the unit.

When it gets cold, the bearings tend to make noises until they warm up. Does the noie go away once the car interior warms up? If so, then you don't have to worry, just endure the noise.

BTW, 40 F isn't that cold - try -28 C (-18F). My car makes all sorts of noises just after startup until it warms up.

Salut, Bob P.

Squeal is pretty much consistent when the temp is below 40f. I'll just turn up the music volume and wait for additional signs that the unit needs replacing.

Thanks!
