Default 05 530i with M54 or 09 528 with N52

I am getting back into the 5 series market,

I am conflicted about which direction to go. The older M54 engines from 04 and 05 have great reviews, but let's face it, they are 10+ years old.

I can also go for the 528i with the N52 after November 2008 with the head cylinder situation resolved.

The test of time should tell by now. Which is more reliable? And enjoyable?

I would buy '08 528i.

What is that 'head cylinder situation' you are referring to?

Valve ticking problem. Around that time they phased in a new cylinder head that fixed the problem for good.

low mileage M54. N52 cylinder head was redesigned and phased into production sometime in very, very late 2008 into early 2009, IIRC.

Here is the SIB for the improved head casting identification:

Excellent info.

Model Year 2008 vehicle is likely to have been manufactured some time in 2007 and is not likely to have the redesigned head.

Here's my 2 cents.

I have two N52 cars. Both bought new.

First is a 2006 530xi with manual transmission.
Second is a 2009 X5.
Both have about 70,000 miles.

Both have had the exhaust valves changed out by BMW for the valve "ticking". One was under warranty and one was just out of warranty and they did it under "goodwill" for no charge.

The ticking is still there from time to time. Never felt like it had any affect on drivability.

Would buy the cars all over again -- but, IMO, the X5 has needed more repairs than should be necessary.

Finally, someone that supports N52 :-)
