05 525d vs 04 525i

I have never bought a diesel car. The current BMW diesel line up is superb but you can still tell its a diesel (especially at low revs). The 530d and 535d are different but my mate has a 525d and with the aircon on it struggles a touch. 177hp in a car that size doesnt really deliver huge performance.
I however have made my mind up - my next car will be a diesel. Hopefully the new X5 either with an upgraded version of the current engine in the 535D or if we get really lucky a 4.0 version (maybe V8??)

I have had my 525dA now 9 months and I have been happy with fuel consumption. My car has now rolled 18 000 kms and average diesel consuption is now 7.18 l/100km (calculated by EXCEL). Lowest figure has been 6.5 liters / 100 km and highest 7.8.
It was surprise to me when changing to wintertyres consumption went down by 0.3 liters average, also 6.5 was achieved using wintertyres and 700 kms during one day.

My board computer usually shows 0.0 - 0.4 more than I get by manual calculation. Of course there is sometimes cases, that the tank did not come full, so I combine those to the next tank. According my experience the board computers is the most accuracy in those cases, when driving long distancies at once and showing too much when a lot of cold starts is needed.

I have an 04 525d M Sport, and find the fuel consumption to be pretty good, averaging around 35mpg. My previous Saab 9-5 Aero (250BHP), did about 25mpg, but admittedly was much much faster. In fact it was faster than any 02/03 5 series bar the 545i.
I went for a diesel due to company car tax, and the 525d M Sport was within my allowance, plus extras. Could have had a 530d SE bog standard, but the M Sport looks infinatly better (even inside). The 530d is faster but its not by a huge amount, theres still plenty of torque in the 2.5d
BTW, is the 530d engine based on the 530i engine in anyway? As that got a BHP increase from 231 to 258 is there similar plans for the 530d, and therefore the 525i and 525d?

We're all waiting for a similar enhancement for the 525d and 535d - lighter block and better injectors...

The 9-5 gas a far nicer cup holder though - sort of smoothly swivels out of the dashboard
