I also have a 525d and getting 28mpg, until I noticed that idrive had units set as US gallons and not UK imperial gallon, once I set it correctly I now regular see around 36-37mpg.

I suppose you cannot get the nautical miles of your iDrive
Why don't we all go for the metric system

I too love the 530d performance. But must have a differnet car from those reporting seeing 40mpg or even 50mpg on gentle use.
I am getting 21mpg commuting and never ever seen more than 35mpg on the most gentle motorway dawdle. Been at the dealer 4 times and no improvement - only a letter stating in writing that low 20's mpg is "commesnureate with the vehicle".

I did a 200-mile trip a while back and did a fairly consistent 65-75mph without really stopping and the fuel computer said just over 50mpg. On this sort of trip I stick the 'box in manual and make sure 6th is engaged... At this speed the torque convertor losses disappear as no slipping occurs.
I beat my father's Renault Megane 1.4 (petrol) on the trip! (mpg that is... )

My Ride: 525d se auto. black sapphire, 17" 5 spoke 138 style alloys. dark poplar trim, charcoal flat weave cloth, bluetooth phone prep, dimming rear view and side mirrors, lumbar support, heated front deats, phone cradle
I test drove the previous 2.5l petrol (192bhp) steptronic before ordering my car and i found the petrol made the car feel heavy, it took so much throttle to get the car moving... however agreed it does 'get up and go' when you push on i find the extra tourqe of the diesel useful and it doesn't sound too bad when you put your foot down... i see around 30mpg in town and about 48mpg usually on a cruise, petrol sounds nice though...

I am sorry to say, but i find it impossible to get 50mpg (=4,7l/100 km) with 525d and Steptronic. Only if you are going down a hill. Unless my 525d has some kind of problem (and my friend's one too).
I get those numbers driving in hyper economy on my 320d manual. On the 525d Step it is impossible!
Are you sure you are reading your numbers well?? Those are numbers hard to get even with Renault 1.5d or Peugeot 1.4 diesel engines.

Agree that!
Found out funny thing other day. I fill up the tank when it was -15C and drove south where it was about -5C or so. iDrive show between 5,6 l/100km and 5,8l/100km. Heh, it looks like diesel swelled in tank so much that I got 0,3L lower values than ever.
Nature fools some times. Do anyone know how much diesel return back to the tank after high pressure pump? And how warm that might be?

I also have a 525d E61 and I never could get numbers below 8L/100km.
Maybe you have a unit problem on your I-drive.

My car hardly ever drops below 30 mpg and i reset the computer regularly. On a run I get high 30's (spirited driving). My 30 mile commute on country roads and A roads gives 33+mpg.
I took a mate out for a spin recently after resetting the computer. We hit 140mph several times. After 30 mins of silly driving my computer said 27mpg.
I'm not complaining. Performance costs money, and I think mine is great value.

might be worthless to most of you but my x5 3.0d on highway crusing
gets 8.3l/100 km so i would imagine that a more aerodynamic and lighter
car like the 530d would easily get less than 7l/100km??
On reference (at a constant speed of 120km between sofia and plovdiv =172km)
e90 320d manual gets me 5.1l/100km
e46 m3 smg get me 6.9l/100km

I finally came to work with my new car!!!
Used this to test fuel consumption, so in economic driving the number is:
7.5 l/100km = 31.3619446 miles per gallon (according to google)
I might get to 7.3 or 7.2. Had to use the "manual" as Steptronic didn't engage 6th when it should (or i would like it to).
I do 5.2 l/100km in my 320d.
My home<->work trip is not on a straight road: 4km in the mountain (200m height diff) + 30 km in highway (no traffic) + 4km in secondary roads + 1km in the city.
I was expecting to get at most 6.8 or 7l/100km with the type of riding i did.
